Consequentia Rerum — Pietro Federico

Consequentia Rerum

A poetry workshop against the sensory crisis of our time

Consequentia Rerum gathers the working method on poetry and language that I have developed through over twenty years of experience in elementary, middle, and high schools.

The starting point is an educational question: what happens to our relationship with reality when language loses precision, concreteness, and the ability to name what we see, hear, and experience?

The workshop uses poetry as an exercise of the gaze, of listening, and of the word: a journey that begins with sensory perception and arrives at writing, working on silence, observation, thematic coherence, and the capacity of the word to adhere to experience.

From this research, workshops for children, adolescents, and adults have emerged over the years.

PRESENTED AT THE CATTOLICA UNIVERSITY OF MILAN

The volume was presented on 7 March 2024 at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan, with Giancarlo Pontiggia and Marisa Verna.

FROM THE BOOK TO THE WORKSHOP

Consequentia Rerum was not born as a theory of poetry. It was born from a workshop. And to the workshop it returns.

FOR ADULTS

Online Poetry Workshops

My online workshops are writing and reading programmes for those who want to deepen their relationship with poetry through close, practical work on texts.

Each participant's own writing lies at the heart of the workshop: learning to read what one has written, recognise its direction, listen to its rhythm, and distinguish what truly belongs to a vision from what weakens it. Working with language thus becomes an exercise in attention — to words, to experience, and to reality.

Each workshop explores a particular dimension of poetic writing, offering tools, readings and a working method that participants can continue to draw on long after the course has ended.

The Vast Exactness of the Secret

The Vast Exactness of the Secret

Online Poetry Workshop

There is a moment in writing that comes before the search for the right word: the moment in which we must learn to listen.

The Vast Exactness of the Secret explores the relationship between perception, experience and language. Through close work on participants' own writing, we will investigate silence, lexical concentration, thematic coherence, rhythm, and poetry's ability to reveal a vision without replacing it with a preconceived image.

A workshop for learning to read more deeply what we write and, through writing, what stands before us.

Writing Poetry That Endures Through the Centuries

Writing Poetry That Endures Through the Centuries

A Workshop in Contemporary Epic Poetry

What allows a poem to outlive its own time? How can contemporary writing engage once again with the vastness of vision, history and myth without reducing them to mere literary material?

This workshop explores the possibility of a contemporary epic poetry. We will work with some of the fundamental forces of poetic construction — transitivity, directionality, thematic coherence and the centrality of the verb — while exploring the relationship between myth, vision, history and presence.

The aim is to take each participant beyond the individual poem towards a larger question: how do we lay the foundations of a body of work?

FOR YOUTH

Poetry as an Experience of the World

My work with young people begins before writing.

It begins with attention: learning to look, to listen, to make room for what is in front of us before trying to name it.

Through poetry, students are invited to rediscover language as a form of experience. We work with silence, sensory perception, observation, lexical precision, rhythm and the relationship between words and reality.

Writing then becomes part of a larger journey: looking at a tree, listening to a place, walking outside the classroom, searching for the necessary word, reading one another's work, and discovering that poetry can change the way we perceive what surrounds us.

The work can also extend beyond the page. Poems, photographs and reflections become exhibitions, installations and shared spaces in which the students' experience can be seen, read and encountered by others.

The Work Begins with Attention

Poetry enters the classroom as a way of looking and listening. Students are asked to question the words they use, to test them against experience, and to discover how much attention is required to say something precisely.

When Poetry Becomes a Space

FOTOGRAFIE DI PAROLE

The work does not necessarily end with a notebook. In Fotografie di parole, poems, images and fragments of experience became an exhibition: words suspended in space, photographs, plants and paths through which visitors could physically enter the students’ work.
